Key Features

5 x 250 ft roll, 1,250 sq ft
covers a large bed in one or two drops, so you are stapling a handful of seams instead of a dozen.
5 oz/sq yd (170 g/m2) woven polypropylene
the weight that holds under mulch and gravel, without the stiffness of the 5.8 oz line.
850N lengthwise and 950N widthwise tensile strength
high enough to resist being dragged when mulch is spread over it or gravel is raked across it.
Woven and permeable
water and air move through the fabric, so beds drain, roots breathe and the soil does not sour underneath.
Cuts and folds by hand
trim it with shears or a utility knife, and fold the leftover roll flat for the next season.

Quick Answer

This 5 x 250 ft roll covers 1,250 sq ft of 5 oz woven polypropylene, wide enough to cover a garden bed in one or two drops and heavy enough to hold its place under mulch or gravel. Tensile strength is 850N lengthwise and 950N widthwise, so spreading mulch or raking stone does not drag the fabric out of position. The weave lets water and air through, so beds drain and the soil underneath keeps working.

Description

At a Glance

1,250 sq ft of 5 oz woven polypropylene in a 5 ft wide roll. Wide enough to cover a bed in one or two drops, heavy enough for mulch or gravel on top, and still permeable so water and air reach the soil.

1,250 Sq Ft, Five Feet Wide

This roll is 5 x 250 ft, so it covers a wide bed in one pass and a long border in a single run. That combination is why this size is the default for a whole-yard job: fewer drops, fewer overlaps, and fewer places for weeds to find a gap.

VEVOR weed barrier landscape fabric overview

What 5 oz Does That 3.2 oz Cannot

At 5 oz per square yard (170 g/m2) with 850N lengthwise and 950N widthwise tensile strength, this fabric is rated to be walked on and to be covered with gravel or mulch without shifting. The lighter 3.2 oz rolls in this family are for mulched planting beds; the moment stone, a wheelbarrow or a parked car is part of the plan, this is the weight class that holds.

The Weeds It Stops, and the One It Does Not

Fabric works by cutting off the light that triggers weed seeds to germinate, which handles everything sprouting from the soil underneath. It does not kill established perennials, and aggressive root weeds such as bindweed and nutsedge can push through a woven fabric. Clear those before laying, and keep the surface mulched so blown seed cannot take hold on top.

Sizes on Either Side

For a narrower strip along a foundation or a side yard, the 3 x 250 ft 5 oz weed barrier covers 750 sq ft. If the plan is a driveway or under pavers, step up to the laminated 5.8 oz heavy duty weed barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I install weed barrier fabric in a garden bed?

A: Clear the ground and level it first, and remove existing weeds rather than covering them. Unroll the fabric, overlap each seam by 4 to 6 in, and pin it with 6 in staples every 12 to 18 in along the edges. Cut an X over each plant, tuck the flaps back, and cover the fabric with mulch so it is not sitting in direct sun.

Q: Does weed barrier fabric kill weeds?

A: It stops new weeds germinating underneath by cutting off light, but it does not kill established perennials that are already growing. Deep-rooted weeds such as bindweed and nutsedge can push through a woven fabric over time, so dig those out before you lay it rather than expecting the fabric to do that job.

Q: How much area does a 5 x 250 ft roll cover?

A: 1,250 sq ft. A standard 4 x 8 ft raised bed is 32 sq ft, so one roll covers about 39 beds of that size if you lay it in strips and accept some offcuts.

Q: Is 5 oz heavy enough under mulch?

A: Yes. Two to three inches of mulch is a light load, and 5 oz fabric also stands up to gravel paths and foot traffic. It is the weight people buy when they want one fabric on hand for both beds and paths.

Q: Will water still reach my plants?

A: Yes. The weave is permeable, so rain and irrigation pass through to the root zone. Drip line or soaker hose laid under the fabric works well and the fabric then reduces evaporation from the soil surface.

Q: Can I lay it over existing weeds?

A: No, and this is the mistake that makes people think fabric does not work. Existing weeds and their root systems push through from below, and perennial grasses come back through the weave. Kill or dig out what is there first, or the fabric just hides the problem.

Q: How do I keep weeds out of the planting holes?

A: Cut the smallest opening that fits the plant, tuck the flaps down around the stem, and mulch right up to the edge of the hole. Every square inch of exposed soil inside a wide hole is a place for a new weed.

Q: How long does it take to lay 1,250 sq ft?

A: Two people on prepared ground should get 1,250 sq ft unrolled, overlapped and stapled in roughly one to one and a half hours, before any mulch goes down. Levelling the ground first is the part that takes the time.
