Retractable Extension Cord Reels for Garages and Workshops

Choose a retractable extension cord reel by the tool’s amperage first, then by the distance from the outlet. A reel that reaches the work area but uses a cord gauge that is too light will trip its breaker or overheat under a heavy load. The wire gauge, cord length, outlet count and mounting position matter more than the reel’s color or retraction speed.

Match the wire gauge to the tool

16 AWG, usually 10 A / 1,250 W: short runs for lights, chargers, fans and other light-duty equipment.
14 AWG, usually 13 A to 15 A / up to 1,875 W: a practical choice for common garage tools and household equipment on a suitable circuit.
12 AWG, usually 15 A / 1,875 W: better for higher-draw saws, compressors and longer runs where voltage drop becomes a concern.

Never choose the reel only by its maximum wattage label. Confirm the plug type, circuit rating and whether the tool will run continuously. If the tool nameplate draws close to the reel’s limit, move up one gauge instead of adding more length.

Pick the length for the room, not the product photo

25 ft to 30 ft: one-car garages, home workshops and patios where the outlet is close to the work.
45 ft to 50 ft: two-car garages, driveways and larger work areas. These lengths usually cover a full bay without stretching the cord across a walkway.
75 ft to 100 ft: long walls, job sites and outdoor work where the nearest outlet is far away. Check voltage drop and keep the cord out of standing water.

Measure the route the cord will actually follow, including the height of a ceiling-mounted reel. A 50 ft reel mounted near the garage door may reach less usable floor area than a 30 ft reel mounted beside the bench.

Features worth checking before checkout
Look for a resettable circuit breaker, a locking mechanism that holds the cord at the length you need, and an outlet head that stays visible when the cord is retracted. SJTOW cord jackets are designed for flexible indoor and outdoor use. For a ceiling or wall install, confirm the mounting bracket and the reel’s weight before drilling. Outdoor use also requires a GFCI-protected outlet and a connection kept clear of puddles.

Still comparing sizes? Read the extension cord reel buying guide for gauge, length and mounting examples. Every reel below ships from our US warehouse, and the product pages list the cord gauge, amperage and outlet configuration before you order.
